The famous brunch at the Hotel Grande Bretagne is back! In the hotel’s beautiful patio, the Winter Garden City Lounge, you can once again enjoy the most luxurious brunch experience in Athens, every weekend.
Specifically, every Saturday and Sunday, from 11:00 to 14:00, Executive Chef Asterios Koustoudis and his team, offer a menu of elegant savoury and sweet flavours. In addition, the soft music and the luxurious surroundings of the Winter Garden City Lounge create the most idyllic atmosphere.
“Weekends at the Winter Garden” is truly an experience. Sure, it’s not for every day (and because of the price), but that’s where the charm of this brunch lies. We’re talking about a culinary experience beyond the ordinary, one that is worth savouring, if you can, even just once. Especially on holidays, Christmas and New Year, or why not, even on a birthday or an anniversary.
I had the opportunity to try it and I’m sharing my experience with you.
“Weekends at the Winter Garden”: the most luxurious brunch in Athens
I tried the brunch during the holiday season and the hotel was quite crowded. This resulted in us being seated a bit cramped, and the service was a bit uncoordinated, but there were no delays.
The space is beautiful, and the dishes are a work of art in themselves – one of the most unique and luxurious brunch experiences in Athens.
The brunch menu: the starters
The most elegant brunch experience in Athens starts with a basket of bread and freshly baked pastries, all created by pastry chef Alexandros Koufas.
And there’s so much! From freshly-baked croissants (both plain and chocolate versions) to mini-baguettes and brioches, all served hot out of the oven.
Furthermore, the basket comes with a variety of homemade jams from seasonal fruits, as well as Greek fir honey, Greek yoghurt with fresh fruit, vanilla cream and homemade chocolate praline arrive on your table. But the star here is the local fresh butter, always served with the hotel’s coat of arms.
In addition, there are plenty of options as regards drinks. You can choose from coffee or tea (various types), hot chocolate, and a variety of natural juices.
The main dishes
The main dishes of the brunch menu sometimes change from year to year, but they are always special, luxurious and with a preference for Greek raw materials. For the 2022-3 season, the brunch menu offers a selection of five dishes:
- Homemade marinated and smoked salmon, caviar, quail egg and salad with beetroot and green apple
- Tarte with spinach, gorgonzola and forest mushrooms
- Omelette with aged cheese, Florina pepper confit, prosciutto and rocket leaves
- Organic farm eggs “benedict” with lobster, asparagus and hollandaise sauce
- Handmade, fresh pasta stuffed with beef, truffle sauce and extra fluffy goat cheese béchamel sauce
We tried the salmon dishes, the eggs benedict and the omelette and they were all delicious. I especially loved the quail egg with caviar and the eggs benedict with lobster.
For dessert, an impressive variety of desserts are served, served on a three-tiered tray. All are creations of the hotel’s pastry shop, with its well-known quality.
A glass of champagne is included in the menu. After all, what else could one accompany such a luxurious brunch, right?
The full menu, (pastries, drinks, main course, desserts and a glass of champagne) costs 58€ per person, while there is also the option for a “smaller” menu, with only the pastries basket (including jams, drinks, etc.) at 38€ per person.
