Brunching is one of my favourite things to do on a weekend. So I was very excited to try the new brunch at Hotel Grande Bretagne, the most luxurious hotel in Athens. Because where else can you have caviar and champagne for brunch?
We arrived at Hotel Grande Bretagne Athens at a very busy time of year for the hotel, right before Christmas. In fact, the lobby was full of people for an event. Nevertheless, the service at the Winter Garden was as impeccable as ever.
The hotel’s Winter Garden atrium was already one of my favourite places for coffee or tea. They serve a delightful Afternoon Tea there, the best in Athens. Consequently, I was very happy for the opportunity to enjoy brunch there as well. By the way, Executive Chef Asterios Koustoudis and his talented team have created this amazing brunch menu.
The ever polite stuff of the Hotel Grande Bretagne welcomed us with a smile and showed us to our table.
As for the brunch itself, it has a variety of dishes, both savoury and sweet. There are typically three options for the main dish and the appetizer, as well as for the drinks.
On the table
The brunch started with the arrival of a “basket”, full of warm croissants, praline-filled puff pastry swirls, different kinds of cakes, breads and more. Pure wow!
Then little pots of handmade jams and marmalade arrived, as well as fresh local butter (chic detail: the butter has the Hotel Grande Bretagne crest embossed on its surface!), chestnut tree honey, vanilla scented fresh cream and Greek yogurt with fruit.
Our chosen beverages also arrived at about the same time. I loved the “Indigenous” smoothie, with tahini, orange juice and a touch of cinnamon. Unexpected but very tasty! In addition, I had a cappuccino coffee, but you can have any kind of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
After a little while, the appetizers arrived. I had ordered a salad with avocado, king crab, emmer wheat and celery. My friend ordered a salad with lettuce, cherry tomatoes, olives, truffle and gruyere cheese flakes. I don’t know about the salad, but the king crab was delicious!
The main dishes followed once we had finished with our starters. My friend ordered the organic Eggs Benedict with lobster and citrus hollandaise sauce. As for myself, I opted for soft-boiled organic eggs with Balik salmon and caviar instead. It was simply amazing!
Of course, such a scrumptious brunch wouldn’t be complete without dessert. There were raspberry tarts and dainty lemon pies, little choux filled with flavoured cream, chocolate treats and even a dessert with gold flakes on top. The sweets are of the French school, i.e. not overly sweet but fresh and elegant.
Overall, I really enjoyed the brunch at the Winter Garden. However, there was a minor mishap. Probably because the hotel was so busy, we didn’t get the glass of champagne normally included in the price. But as we were having such a great time, we didn’t miss it until long after we left. Everything else was great. The food, the presentation, everything. An experience, for sure.
